Gemmology 101
I have been studying Gemmology, which is the science of gemstones and precious metals since 2004. I first started my studying gemmology at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and then later on my I wanted a more deeper scientific concentration, so in 2007 I enrolled at the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (GEM-A), which is the oldest and most prestigious educational gemmology program in the world. I hope to one day earn the highest degree in the profession of gemmology, ….a Fellowship from GEM-A (FGA). I prefer to spell gemmology with two (m’s) because of the amount of time I spend studying in the British system and because I just like spelling it that way.
Minerals are inorganic materials that form naturally in the Earth. Minerals of the same type share the same chemical formula and do in the same ordered crystal structure…..They are the Most stable form of matter in the Universe.
For a long as I can remember, I have always loved Science. I was the kid who would rather watch Star Trek or Mutual Omaha “Wild Kingdom” than a baseball game. Over the decades of my life, I have earn degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, but it wasn’t until I discovered Gemmology that I truly found my calling. Gemmology is a different kind of science. While all science has its own particular “raison d’etre” gemstones and minerals studying Gemmology allows me to bring all my passions about science together. Gemmology touches on so many aspects of our lives as human beings. The history of Mankind revolves gemstones and minerals either directly or indirectly The posts in this section will look at many different aspects of gemmology, but it will be more than just the same kind of information you can find in a multitude of websites about gemstones. I want to discuss the science of gemmology with a constant focus of how gemstones and minerals touch our world in ways most people never really think about.
